I’m fairly certain this was the last volume of Authority before WildStorm went under and got folded into the main DC-verse. It’s also one of the better post-Ellis stories (along with Revolution) and I highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already~
In any event, the story follows the team as they deal with the end of the world. The Carrier crashes into London and everything pretty much goes to hell for everyone real fast; there’s a general loss of powers and abilities, the Carrier is crippled, they don’t have any doors … Never mind all the monsters they have to fight and people that need supplies and protection …
What killed me the most was what happened to Midnighter and Apollo, though. They have to be apart due to Apollo’s inability to stay on the surface for any length of time; he can’t hold his solar charges for long and being away from the sun is killing him. It’s heart-breaking and the fact that Midnighter calls Apollo via balloons just makes it even more so.
There’s other plot stuff that happens with everyone else, Apollo gets infected with a crazy disease and is, more or less, put on ice so he doesn’t rage out and kill everyone. Midnighter goes to Scotland, fights a dragon and is gifted an apple from Avalon. And then we get a happy ending. Or, well, as happy an ending as you can get considering it’s still the end of the world and the end of a damn fine comic book, but I’ll take it.
